What tests would I do to determine if an unknown bacteria is bifidobacterium longum?
Q. I know that its a gram positive rod that doesn't produce endospores. I have done some other tests and I have that its positive for motility, lactose, and Methyl-Red, and that its negative for VP and urea. But are any of these relevant?
Asked by Elizabeth - Sat Apr 11 03:01:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The bacteria in the genus Bifidobacterium are non-motile, so if your motility test is correct your isolate is not Bifidobacterium longum Also you don't state your isolate is anaerobic , Bifidobacterium are obligate anaerobes If you can elaborate a bit more about your situation I may be able help further You say you have a G+ve bacteria but all the other tests are those used to split Gram -ve facultative anaerobes (which can grow aerobically or anaerobically) .If you were able to do these tests without an anaerobic gas jar your bacteria cannot be a strict anaerobe like Bifidobacterium. The results seem to indicate the genus Escherichia (grows aerobically and anaerobically) Gram stains can give false positive results if not decolourized… [cont.]

What are the tested Indian brands for probiotic combination of Lactobacillus Acidophylus and Bifidobacterium ?
Q. I need the same for IBS. What is the recommended maintenance dose for the same ? Can they be taken on long term basis without adverse effects ? Pl. help.

A. I have no idea what you mean by "tested Indian brands". But probiotics are safe for daily use with no side effects...it is the same bacteria that is present in yogurt, expect in concentrated amounts. Other things that may benefit IBS is enteric coated oil of peppermint oil capsules, an elimination diet to check for food intolerances, and aloe vera juice.

Q. Anyone know how the name Bifidus or Bifidobacterium came to be?
Asked by Scarlett - Mon May 4 23:20:05 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Latin bifidus means: forked Bifidobacterium is a genus of Gram-positive, non-motile, often branched anaerobic bacteria. Bifidobacteria are one of the major genera of bacteria that make up the gut flora, the bacteria that reside in the colon. Bifidobacteria aid in digestion, are associated with a lower incidence of allergies (Bjoerksten et al., 2001) and also prevent some forms of tumor growth (Guarner and Malagelada, 2003). Some bifidobacteria are being used as probiotics. Before the 1960s, Bifidobacterium species were collectively referred to as "Lactobacillus bifidus".

what pro-biotic drinks contain bifidobacterium infantis/bifantis??
Q. I suffer from IBS and was reading some research which stated that pro-biotoc drinks containing bifidobacterium infantis can help a large majority of the symptoms related to IBS. I looked at the different drinks available such as Actimel, yakult and muller but to no avail. Does anyone know??
Asked by Alistair M - Tue Mar 25 10:26:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It does not matter mate, i think in yakult or actimel its called something like lifodibacterium, or something along them lines. Its all the same, basically all your looking for is cultures in the drink as long as its got good bacteria in it thats what counts. Each manufacurer of probiotics/prebiotics all use different names for them. You could also use multibionta probiotic vitamins, or you can actually buy the cultures (good bacteria) in a tablet at holland and barret, it has something like 10 million good bacteria in it.

A. Hum google is a wonderful source, but i would suppose it's related to E. Coli, which lives in your small intestine and helps you metabolize vitamins, as well as keeping other, more deadly bacteria out. I'm of course reffering to a specific type of E. Coli, as some are very deadly.

infant probiotic (Bifidobacterium lactis) approval in US?
Q. I heard that the FDA has finally approved for the drug to be sold OTC here in the U.S. However: I cannot find where on the website: that it states that. Also, does the American Society of Pediatric finally approve using probiotics for infants? I heard so but I need the evidence to show my PED. Please note I attempt both the FDA.gov web and the aap.org site. Cannot find any info. There are not products out in stores! But unfortunately, the city I live in is not so updated. I need to get my siblings to buy and ship it to me out of state. Yet, I am still hesitant: I want to see more approval evidence. A. The reason you will not find any information regarding probiotics in general on the FDA website is because they do not have to be approved by the FDA, similar to dietary supplements and herbal supplements. Unless the probiotic maker claims the culture will cure a disease or if the probiotic is harming people the FDA will not be involved. I couldn't find any current resources on the safety of probiotics in children. however, this study from last year states that probiotics are safe for children. You may want to read over the study...

Could we survive without bacteria? Does our survival depend on them?
Q. I mean, I know that Lactobacillis acidophilus and Bifidobacterium hang around in our digestive tracts, right? Would we die without them? It's kind of a strange thought- that we depend so much on bacteria. I was just wondering. Thanks.

A. They are both awesome whole grain (contain barley, rice or oat) foods - the higher protein food would be better for a dog with a much higher activity level or a higher metabolism. We have mostly northern breed mixes - malamutes, huskies - and they have high energy and are very active. They require the higher protein. But they also require being active enough to burn it off. We also have a GSD that cannot handle the "richness" of the high protein and it causes loose stools on him. He gets high quality food, just lower protein levels. It all depends on your dog. My honest opinion, if your dog is doing that well on the quality food he's already on, don't change it. Following the train of thought, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also -… [cont.]

A. I can't give you a very scientific answer, but intuitively: I don't think so. Too many bacteria, too few macrophage. You could heat the milk and then (once it cools) add the blend. Also I didn't think milk had macrophage? I know it has antibodies, and if you heat the milk, those will almost definitely be destroyed. That said, I would be buying pasteurized milk, especially for a child just off antibiotics. Perhaps you could also try yogurt?

A. Look at the size difference in the list of ingrediants - Fosters clearly has a lot more fillers and additives to bulk up their food. Blue Buffalo looks and sounds so much better, at least you know exactly what each ingredient is rather than "Choline Chloride, Mannganese Sulfate" etc. If you dont know what is actually in the food, would you eat it?! Are you in the states? Id like to find this Blue Buffalo food! EDIT *Damn it, Im in Uk!!

A. Look at the size difference in the list of ingrediants - Fosters clearly has a lot more fillers and additives to bulk up their food. A. We feed Orijen Large Breed puppy. It is actually canadian made as well. One thing we liked is that they grow/farm most of their ingredients themselves instead of buying from other sources. The mixed tocopherols in the first one is a preservative that some people feel is undesirable. I have never heard of the first food, but looking at the ingredients, it looks fine as well. We LOVE the Orijen. Our dogs have responded so well to it. Also, they have a frequent buyer program. For every 12 bags you purchase you get a free one. Not a HUGE incentive program...but it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick! :) We use the Large Breed Puppy Orijen for our Bull Mastiff puppy and the regular Adult Orijen for our 2 y.o.… [cont.]

Probiotics recommendation?
Q. I want to buy a probiotic, but since there are so many out there, I'm not sure about which one to get. I want to know what I should look for when I buy a probiotic? What should I avoid? Is this one a good choice? (it has milk as one of the ingredients; does that matter?) What about this one? Thanks. Can anyone recommend a specific probiotic? Also, is GNC a good company for probiotics or do they make low quality probiotics?

A. It is really hard to know which is the "best" when it comes to probiotics because it is very difficult to test for which ones you may be deficient in (even for the doctors that know how to find out). Truth be told, any answer given here will just be personal opinion (I can give you my opinion if you'd like). There are many higher quality companies out there that are readily available and well priced... just make sure the company has a good rating with either the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or USP (U.S. Pharmacopoeia), as those are the main quality assurance organizations (USP is for the U.S., GMP is for the U.S. and worldwide). All that being said, if you get a good quality probiotic that has 3-6 billion viable organisms from 3-5… [cont.]
