If a supplement as 500mg of elemental calcium how much does your body absorb?
Q. If a supplement as 500mg of elemental calcium how much does your body absorb?
Asked by Sweet Thang - Tue Apr 1 14:04:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a hard question to answer. I cannot say you will absorb 400mg of it or perhaps 250mg. Absorption is affected by calcium status, vit. D status, age, pregnancy and the calcium content of meals. As the amount of Ca++ increases, the efficiency of absorption decreases. The amount of vit. D present affects absorption. And in adulthood absorption begins to decline to 15-20% and declines even more as we get older. You might absorb 60% of a 500mg supplement whereas I might absorb 80%. And if you skipped vit. D on one day and stayed indoors, you might absorb even less than 60%. There are too many variables to give one single answer.

Chemistry help! Explanations of bonding, properties of substances and elemental composition.?
Q. I'm sorry there's quite a few questions but i have had a go at them but i want to know what the answers are as there is no markscheme. Thankyou! 1) What form of bonding would you expect between barium and iodine ions in barium iodide? Give a brief explanation of your answer. Now i know the answer is ionic bonding, but why specifically? Is it something to do with their respective electronegativity?? 2) The rubidium-strontium dating technique is based on the beta decay of isotope rubidium 87. Write a nuclear equation for this reaction, identifying the parent isotope and the daughter isotope. 3) Refering to a diagram (that i draw) showing the arrangement of calcium ions and carbonate ions in a two dimensional section of calcite, explain… [cont.]

A. 1) ionic bonding. yes their electronegativity and electropositivity. barium is 2+ and iodine is 1-. barium will gain 2 electrons. one each from the iodine so it'll need 2 iodine as the iodine will need to discharge an electron. 2) 89 Rb === 89 Sr + 0e 37 38 1 3) calcite is a crystalline substance. they have an arrangement similar to that of sodium chloride where each anion is bordered by cations. like charges do not come in contact with each other. when pressure is applied to the lattice and the anions come in contact with anions and cations with cations they repel each other and the structure shatters. hence the compound being brittle. 4) quarts is silicon dioxide and felspar is potassium aliminium sillicate. these are… [cont.]

Q. a calcium tablet label says: calcium carbonate 1000mg (providing elemental calcium 400mg) does this mean its got 1000mg of calcium of 400mg?
Asked by Lisa - Mon Oct 13 02:42:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Elemental calcium is a term used in dietary supplement part referring to calcium form available for human body.A pill supplying calcium will be in the form of a calcium compound like carbonate which is 40% calcium by weight. Thus a 1000mg.pill of calcium carbonate contains 400mg.of calcium available for useful purposes to human body and the container will indicate each pill has 400mg.of "elemental calcium "So it is the actual calcium in the pill.

A. I don't know how good they are in terms of anti-aging, but most multi vitamins are great for the skin and more importantly, for your overall health. Most diets do not include all the vitamins and minerals your body needs on a daily basis. Every doctor I've ever known has always recommended a good one-a-day multi supplement for overall good health. Continue to take your One A Day's, but don't expect miracles. One pill can't be responsible for replacing a healthy diet, and lifestyle.

I mean everyone's different, but I don't see anything in there that would make you puke. I've tried other diet products before and I didn't feel too many different horrible side effects. A. Not weird, from my experience. I had to take the iron pills in addition to my prenatals, and my doctor suggested I eat iron rich foods as well. Total cereal was a good option they gave me, I used to eat it for breakfast almost every morning. Everything definitely helped, but even if it does you need to continue with it until after your pregnancy. My iron levels were fine until after I had my baby, then they dropped again and I had to continue the iron pills for a few more days.

Total mass of reagents if only 95% efficient?
Q. I'm a bit stumped by these efficiency questions: Elemental phosphorus is produced by treating rock phosphate, Ca3(PO4)2, with a mixture of carbon and silicon dioxide, according to the following equation: 2Ca3(PO4)2 (l) + 6SiO2 (l) + 10C (s) ---> P4 (g) + 6CaSiO3 (l) 10CO (g) In this process, the rock phosphate is rarely pure, and various unavoidable losses occur, reducing the efficiency of the process. a) If the rock phosphate used contains 90% calcium phosphate, how much rock phosphate is needed to produce 1 tonne (1000kg) of phosphorus, P4? b) If the process is only 95% efficient, what is the total mass of reagents needed to produce 1 tonne of phosphorus?
