Hypomagnesemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally low level of magnesium in the blood. Usually a serum level less than 0.7 mmol/L is used as reference. Hypomagnesemia is not equal to magnesium deficiency. Hypomagnesemia can be present without magnesium deficiency and vice versa. The prefix hypo- means low (contrast with hyper-, meaning high). The middle 'magnes' refers to magnesium. The end portion of the word, -emia, means 'in the blood;' note, however, that hypomagnesemia is usually indicative of a systemic magnesium deficit.

It may result from a number of conditions including inadequate intake of magnesium, chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, alcoholism, chronic stress, diuretic use and other disorders.

Worsened MVP link with hypomagnesemia: how can I rule out the latter?
Q. Thanks a lot for the answer lab guy, I read some things about MVP and hypomagnesemia. Now if anyone can help me figure out which speacialist should i go to check it I have it and if I do, how can I treat it. I guess treatment will differ wether the problem is due to low intake or to malabsorption, but if anyone can help me found more easy to read information I will be again very grateful. Thanks a lot

A. You don't need a specialist all you have to do is go to your PCP and have the doctor listen to your heart while getting some blood work done as they can test your mag to see if it low. After that they can either elect to treat you or send you to a cardiologist.

hypermagnesemia and hypomagnesemia, help?
Q. what are the possible nursing diagnoses related to hypermagnesemia and hypomagnesemia?? thanks..
Asked by gwapa - Mon Jan 7 23:08:13 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take the signs and symptoms of both and then you can write your Nursing Diagnosis from the signs and symptoms. Examples: hypermagnesia causes weakness, confusion, hypotension, respiratory msucle paralysis, and cardiac arrest. Weakness: Nursing Diagnosis would be Risk for falls Work through each ones symptoms and come up with a diagnosis for each symptom, remembering that a nursing diagnosis can not be a diagnosis that only a physician can make. It is based on the symptoms and prevention of further complications. Hope this helps.
